Usuario:Unlocking Transcendence Review 6
The receiving of the Holy Spirit Unlocking Transcendence carried a unique source of power, equaled to what Jesus possessed. The word "power" referenced in this passage means strength, power or supernatural ability. The disciples were to possess extraordinary powers to confront, withstand and overcome the realm of darkness. Evidence of these powers are seen throughout the book of Acts as the lame were healed, the dead were raised to life, and the powers of darkness were pushed back and rendered ineffective, while cities and its inhabitants were transformed.
The reference to "when" is a time of this supernatural release, and hindsight notes this initial release took place on the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after Jesus' death. Pentecost is a day of great symbolism. First, it is the day commemorating the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, a day of celebration known as Shavuot, which took place fifty days after the exodus. Second, it was a day when the initial wheat harvest ended and two loaves of bread were presented to commemorate the season's completion. Third, today it is known as the birth of the church, when the promise of the Holy Spirit was fulfilled. On this day a harvest of souls was gathered in and presented as the first-fruits of a new spiritual harvest.
The presence of Holy Spirit upon our life is crucial. It is noted in many passages (Luke 1:25, 2:35, Acts 8:16) that He rests "upon" us, referring to His abiding presence in our lives. Jesus, after His baptism in water, the Holy Spirit is said to have rested "upon him" (Matthew 3:16). The word 'witness' initially meant someone who testified of Jesus' death and resurrection. Eventually the term became known as someone who died for their testimony of Jesus. The early disciples testified with tremendous boldness and passion of this "new" life, even to the point of death. Stephen, the first martyr, did not water down his message of the living Christ. The phrase "will be" in this phrasing is a strong, declarative statement, which only becomes a reality when we experience Him through our conversion. In others words, an encounter with the resurrected Christ compels us to preach (1 Corinthians 9:16) the gospel; we will be compelled to become His witnesses.
